What this number is

The year-on-year change in Argentina's national Consumer Price Index as compiled by INDEC, the national statistics institute, and published around the middle of each month at 16:00 Buenos Aires time for the month before. This page reads the series from the Banco Central de la República Argentina's statistics API (variable 28), which mirrors INDEC's release; the monthly rate (variable 27) is shown beside it.

Why it matters

Argentina has lived with inflation above 20% a year for most of two decades and above 100% in 2023 and 2024, so the monthly rate, not the annual one, is the number its markets trade. Each print moves the official and parallel peso rates, Argentine dollar bonds and the ADRs and country fund (ARGT) US investors hold, and it is the measure every IMF programme review is read against.

Questions readers ask

A methodology note: how far back can this series be trusted?
INDEC's CPI from 2007 to 2015 was produced under political intervention; the IMF censured Argentina for it in 2013 and INDEC itself disowned the figures after 2015. The current national CPI starts in 2016 with a new methodology and a national basket from 2017. This page carries the series from 2016; comparisons before that date use provincial or private indices and say so in our coverage.
Why is the monthly rate quoted more than the annual one?
At Argentine inflation levels the annual rate is dominated by months long past. A move from 4% to 2% a month is the news; the year-on-year figure takes a year to show it.
What is the BCRA's policy rate?
The central bank stopped publishing a single policy rate in 2025 and manages liquidity through its monetary aggregates and the exchange-rate band. That is why this page shows the monthly inflation rate beside the chart rather than a policy rate.
