What this number is

The quarterly change in real gross domestic product, expressed as an annual rate, from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Each quarter gets three estimates: advance, second and third, about a month apart.

Why it matters

It is the broadest measure of the economy. Two consecutive negative quarters is the popular recession test, though the official call rests on monthly data as well.

Questions readers ask

Why does the number change after the first release?
The advance estimate is published about four weeks after the quarter ends with incomplete trade, inventory and services data. The second and third estimates fill those in and can move growth by a point.
What does annualized mean?
The quarter's growth compounded as if it continued for a year. A 0.8% rise in one quarter is reported as about 3.3% annualized.
