September CPI: +0.6% Energy Headline vs Sticky Core Near 3%

The Fed's next move probably comes down to one number split two ways: how much of Wednesday's September CPI is energy, and how much is core. Headline CPI ran +3.35% year over year in August with core PCE at +3.01%, and effective fed funds has sat at 3.88% for three straight weeks, the setup heading into the Oct 27-28 FOMC.
September CPI arrives Wednesday at 12:30Z with a consensus headline of +0.6% month over month, nearly all of it energy, against a core reading of +0.2% m/m and +2.5% y/y, per the Wells Fargo Week Ahead consensus cited by Bloomberg. Producer prices follow Thursday, and the Beige Book lands Wednesday evening, the last scheduled color before the committee meets. The Fed has already cut twice this year, so the live question is whether it holds a third time.

The headline and core are splitting because the expected hot print is oil. Hurricanes have taken Gulf output offline and the Russia-Ukraine energy standoff has kept the squeeze on, and the Fed has long said it looks through transitory energy swings. A one-month energy spike against a contained core lets Powell hold without sounding hawkish. The risk runs the other way: a print that comes in hot on core too, which would confirm inflation is not just gasoline and undercut the case for the two cuts already delivered.
Add money supply growing at +5.66% year over year, the fastest pace since 2021, and Wednesday becomes a two-way event. A headline that is hot on core firms the hawkish hold, pressures the long end with the 10-year already above 5.2%, and favors cash and inflation hedges. A soft core releases the pro-risk liquidity trade that risk assets have been running on.

The read to watch is whether Wednesday's CPI makes the pause a patient one or a hawkish one. Either way, the Oct 27-28 decision now hinges on the split.
