Gold is holding near $4,177 after slipping off a $4,216 breakout, and this is not a supply story. It is a currency and real-rates story: the dollar pushed to an 18-month high (DXY 102.12) while the 10-year Treasury yield climbed toward 5.3%, roughly a 2002 high, and that combination is the wall the metal hit near the top of its range. The one-month band of $4,141 to $4,425 keeps support firm just below spot, so the pullback has stayed orderly so far.

The metal is fighting the dollar, not a supply squeeze

Gold slipped from $4,216 to around $4,177 as the DXY hit an 18-month high, per Yahoo Finance session quotes and Goodreturns' coverage of the dollar push. Failing to hold the breakout tells you the heavy hand on the metal is the strength of the greenback and the creep in long-duration yields, not weak physical demand. The one-month range of $4,141 to $4,425 still has support firm just below spot, and the 52-week band of roughly $3,901 to $5,586 is extremely wide, which leaves room for consolidation before anyone calls this anything more than a pause.

The outlook hinges on today's data. The September CPI print lands at 12:30 UTC with consensus around a 0.6% month-over-month headline on energy, core near 3%. A hotter-than-expected core would push the real-rates argument further and likely break gold below the $4,140 support line, while a soft read takes pressure off the metal and gives the breakout another try. The Federal Reserve remains on hold at 3.88% per the September FOMC minutes, so the policy rate is not the near-term lever here; the bond market's repricing is.

Silver consolidates, copper grinds higher

Silver is sitting near $59.2, consolidating inside its one-month range of $59.1 to $66.6 without a fresh industrial trigger this session. Copper is the firmer of the two, grinding up near $6.75 on December COMEX against a monthly high around $6.83, tracking the industrial-reflation and supply-tightening narrative rather than the dollar's weight.
