A near-record close that isn't broadening: what the S&P 500's narrow advance is really saying

The S&P 500 closed Friday up 0.54% at 7,743.41, within 1.0% of its 7,816.70 record, and the first instinct is to read that as strength. The tape under the index says something narrower. The Dow rose 0.94%, industrials were the day's strongest sector, and tech, financials and health care all cleared the index. The Russell 2000 gained barely 0.11%, energy fell 0.89%, and communication services gave back the most of any sector. That split is the whole story of late September: an index chasing history on the back of large-cap quality, while the breadth that would confirm a durable advance stays conspicuously flat.
