U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs hit their sharpest reversal of the month on Oct 22, shedding a net $635 million after five sessions of roughly $1 billion in inflows, the biggest single-day pull since June. The whipsaw does not look like a structural unwind: about $57 to $58 billion of net cumulative inflows remain in the funds since their January 2024 launch, so what the tape shows is institutional positioning swinging with the macro clock rather than a stampede for the door.

The inflow run that set up the reversal was concentrated in one fund. Between Oct 15 and Oct 21 the spot bitcoin ETFs took in a net $997.4 million after a prior-week outflow of $228.4 million, and BlackRock's IBIT supplied $875.1 million of it, roughly 88% of the total. That is the pattern that makes the tape fragile: when a single vehicle carries nearly all of the demand and that vehicle turns, the headline flow number flips fast. On Oct 22 IBIT alone lost $254 million of the $635 million total, per SoSoValue data cited by Cryptobriefing and Odaily, the steepest single-day pull for the group since June.

Read it against the cumulative ledger and it looks like repositioning, not abandonment. The roughly $57 to $58 billion in net inflows logged since launch remain intact, so the Oct 22 drawdown is money rotating within a still-large base of committed exposure. The macro calendar explains the timing. September CPI printed 3.7% year over year, above the 3.6% consensus, the 10-year Treasury yield closed near 5.12% on Oct 20, and heading into the week CME FedWatch implied about 15.5% odds of a hike at the Oct 28 decision.

The other read is that this is noise, not a regime shift. A $635 million outflow against a roughly $57 to $58 billion cumulative base is repositioning, and the demand that showed up on Oct 19 and Oct 21 was a bet on the Fed, not a loss of conviction in bitcoin. If the Fed holds on Oct 28 and the 10-year yield retreats from 5.12%, that same institutional demand could reignite quickly, so the flow tape is best read through the decision rather than in isolation.

Bitcoin traded near $81,800 after the reversal, inside a week that ran from a $79,680 low to a $83,340 high, consistent with a market pricing macro uncertainty rather than a fundamental repricing. What to watch is the Oct 28 Fed outcome and whether the October ETF flows hold their base through it; a pause or a hike both keep real yields under pressure, the main headwind for a liquidity-sensitive asset.
