Thinnest EU gas cushion in 15 years: the refill math
Europe is walking into the 2026-27 heating season with the thinnest stored-gas cushion in 15 years, and the arithmetic that fills it back up is the story, not the headline number. The refill arithmetic sits inside our oil and energy coverage . Storage sat at 69.59% full on September 19, which is 15.84 percentage points below the five-year average for that date and the lowest fill for the date since records began in 2011, according to GIE AGSI data carried by TASS. That is roughly 76.2 billion cubic meters in the ground, about 13.4 bcm less than a year ago and the lowest volume since 2013. The November 1 refill deadline is four weeks out.
