Spot ether ETFs are recording their largest monthly outflow since November 2025, with about $1.08 billion exiting in October. ETH trades near $2,403. The outflows erase September's roughly $832 million inflow, leaving year-to-date net inflows near $485 million.

The contrast with bitcoin is stark. US spot bitcoin ETFs added $524.8 million on Oct 21, a third straight session of inflows, with BlackRock's IBIT leading at $235 million, even as bitcoin held near $82,700. Ether's funds have moved the other way, per FXStreet and SoSoValue data, and the divergence points to allocators preferring a single-asset bitcoin vehicle over the staking and complexity profile that ether wrappers carry.

On-chain data offers little counterweight. Total DeFi value locked sits near $91.4 billion, with Ethereum at roughly $50.2 billion, little changed in recent sessions. None of that is a collapse, but it is not the kind of demand that would arrest the outflow either.

Regulatory developments are incremental. The SEC's comment period on its proposed Regulation Crypto Assets framework closed Oct 20, with Bitwise, Hyperliquid, SIFMA and AIMA urging revisions. FINMA approved Switzerland's first retail spot bitcoin ETF, and the SEC postponed an in-kind creation and redemption decision for Bitwise bitcoin and ether funds, a pacing item rather than a setback.

The contrarian read is that the ether outflows could simply be rotation rather than rejection, and that bitcoin's three-day inflow streak may be a pause rather than a trend, with allocators flighty all month. Yields near 5.15% on the 10-year Treasury and a firm dollar still cap the whole complex.

The near-term direction hinges on the Oct 28 FOMC decision. If yields break lower, the whole complex could lift quickly. If they push higher, ether, the weaker of the two, is the one that gives back first.
