Dollar Strength Crushes Gold, Silver as Oil Rallies

Gold and silver prices dropped sharply on Tuesday despite escalating Middle East tensions. The GLD ETF closed at $396.75, down 2.86%, while silver's SLV ETF fell 3.68% to $57.92. These metals typically rally during geopolitical stress, but the dollar and real收益率 overwhelmed that dynamic this time.

The dollar's strength creates a straightforward headwind for commodities priced in USD. When the dollar gains, foreign buyers need more of their own currency to buy the same amount of gold or oil, which dampens demand. Gold futures sit at $4368.40, down 0.64%, but the ETFs tell the real story: leveraged traders and ETF holders are booking profits, not adding to positions.
Silver's deeper decline makes sense when you look at copper futures, which slipped 0.90% to $6.54. That is industrial demand signaling caution, and silver takes the hit on both sides: it loses when gold sells off, and it loses when industrial sentiment softens. The 3.68% drop in SLV versus 2.86% in GLD shows this dual pressure in action.
Oil moved in the opposite direction, with USO jumping 5.46% to $141.00. The US-Iran conflict threatens actual supply through the Strait of Hormuz, which handles roughly 20% of global oil trade. That is a physical disruption risk that outweighs the dollar headwind, at least for now. If the conflict stays contained, oil could reverse quickly, but any escalation through Hormuz changes the calculus entirely.
The dollar is the primary driver across these markets right now. Real yields remain elevated as the Fed maintains its hawkish stance, and that combination keeps gold capped despite the geopolitical headlines. Watch the dollar index and real yield levels closely. Any softening there could let gold catch up to the risk premium that oil has already priced in.
