Gas at $4.32 and a 6.95 Percent Mortgage: The Two Lines Squeezing Households Right Now

Gasoline did the damage this week. The EIA's weekly retail survey put the national average for regular at $4.319 a gallon on September 14, up from $4.157 the week before, a 16.2 cent jump that is the largest weekly move of 2026. For a household filling a 15 gallon tank twice a month, that is $4.86 more per month than last week and $29.40 more than last September. Twelve months ago the same tank cost $50.09 at the September 2025 monthly average of $3.339 per BLS average price data. The pump is now the single largest year-over-year increase in any category of the household budget we track.
