Mortgage Rates Snap Seven Weeks of Cal and Hit 6.95 Percent Against Record Supply

The weekly mortgage rate print is usually a footnote. This week it is the story. Freddie Mac's Primary Mortgage Market Survey put the 30 year fixed at 6.95 percent for the week of September 17, up 19 basis points from 6.76 percent a week earlier. That is the largest one week move in the series since April 17, 2025, and it ended a stretch of seven straight weeks in which the rate held inside a band narrower than 25 basis points. The rate has now climbed 30 basis points in three weeks.
