The average contract rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage with a conforming loan balance reached 7.12 percent in the Mortgage Bankers Association survey for the week ending September 18, 2026, the highest since May 2024, and borrowers responded by leaving the product. The adjustable-rate share of applications jumped to 9.8 percent, the highest reading in this cycle, from 6.01 percent a month earlier according to the same survey.
