Dario Amodei's essay asking the AI industry to slow down was a markets story the day it landed, knocking almost 6% off the semiconductor index. It became a legal one on Saturday, September 19, when four paying AI subscribers sued Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceXAI and Google in the Northern District of California, arguing the four rivals coordinated a slowdown in violation of antitrust law. The suit is a consumer class action over subscription value, not a regulatory action, and it may well fail. For investors, though, it converts the vaguest risk in the AI trade, that the frontier labs might collectively throttle model progress, into a concrete, litigable question with a courtroom calendar.
