Equities closed Monday lower into a defined catalyst, with SPY, the most-traded S&P 500 ETF, at $760.88 on Monday, down 0.45% and 2.4% below the $779.37 52-week high just as the Federal Reserve's September decision arrives tomorrow. The pullback builds on Stocks Bounce After a Four-Day Slide, but a Binary Fed Looms, the prior session's bounce off the four-day slide. This is not a panic. It is a deliberate, defensive rotation into a meeting where markets now price an 88% chance of a 25 basis point hike on Sept 16, per Kalshi implied odds.

The tape told a clean rotation story. Communication services (XLC) climbed 2.19% to $115.07, healthcare (XLV) added 1.45% to $167.75 and staples (XLP) rose 1.25%, the clearest expression of risk-off positioning before a hawkish print. The laggards were the high-multiple growth names: tech (XLK) shed 1.81% to $184.28, industrials (XLI) fell 1.42% and utilities (XLU) lost 1.34%, all on Yahoo Finance data.

The selling was concentrated rather than broad. The Nasdaq proxy (QQQ) fell 0.80%, a steeper decline than the Dow ETF (DIA, down 0.25%) and the Russell 2000 ETF (IWM, down 0.34%). That divergence points to heavy pressure on mega-cap growth, the part of the market whose valuations stretch furthest into the future and therefore carry the most sensitivity to a higher terminal rate.

The VIX spiked 7.95% to 17.10 against a modest SPY decline. That gap between volatility and price is a classic sign of hedging demand ahead of a binary event rather than a broad distribution-driven selloff, and it leaves the index still well below panic territory. The hedging pattern mirrors VIX Jumps 8.4% as Investors Rotate to Defense from the week prior.

Why it matters: tech carries the heaviest weight in the S&P 500, so its 1.81% drag moved the index even as defensive sectors advanced. The direction of the follow-through usually tracks tomorrow's outcome, with markets having already de-risked into the decision.

Outlook: watch the Sept 15-16 FOMC decision and press conference as the primary catalyst; the 2.4% drawdown into the meeting is historically modest for a pre-policy pullback, and SPY sits 1.53% off its 20-session close heading into Wednesday.
