The loudest number in the August Challenger report was the job cuts headline: 52,881 announced reductions, up 58 percent from July's 33,429. The number that matters for the next two quarters is quieter. Restructuring led all cut reasons at 16,173, or 31 percent of the month's total, the first month since February in which artificial intelligence did not top the list, and employers have now announced plans to hire 119,825 workers this year, up 37 percent from the 87,626 planned through August 2025. Firms are reorganizing and advertising intent to hire at the same time, and neither is showing up in payrolls.
