BIMCO Puts a Number on the Freight Party: 14 Million TEU of New Ships Are Coming

The container market is having one of its better years, and BIMCO has just published the bill for the party. The consultancy's September Container Shipping Market Overview and Outlook, released 23 September 2026, puts ship supply growth at roughly 5 to 6 percent for 2027 under both of its Strait of Hormuz scenarios, against demand growth of 0.5 to 4.5 percent depending on whether the strait reopens. Under either case, supply outruns demand, and BIMCO chief shipping analyst Niels Rasmussen is explicit about what follows: increased supply growth will drive a weakening of the markets during 2027.
