BTC, ETH ETFs Draw $2.6B in Best Inflow Week Since October

Bitcoin and ether spot ETFs pulled a combined $2.6 billion of net new capital last week, the strongest combined inflow week since October, even as both coins traded lower on the day. That gap between price and flow is the story: institutions bought the wrapper while spot dipped, which reads as accumulation into weakness rather than chasing a rally.
The volume behind that flow matters as much as the number itself. Weekly trading volume across the BTC and ETH ETF complex roughly tripled to about $29 billion, according to ETF flow data reported August 22. A flow inflection paired with a volume spike typically signals active repositioning by institutional desks, not passive drift from automatic rebalancing.
Context keeps the enthusiasm in check. Both the BTC and ETH ETF categories remain net negative on a year-to-date basis even after last week's rebound, so this is a partial retracement of a longer drawdown in institutional allocation, not a fresh high-water mark for exposure. Spot BTC traded near $77,100 and ETH near $2,446 on August 24, both down modestly on the day, while IBIT and ETHA, the largest spot BTC and ETH ETF proxies, gained 6.02% and 3.93% respectively.
Crypto is also competing for the marginal institutional dollar and losing some of that contest this month. The Nasdaq-100 ETF, QQQ, pulled roughly $11 billion in August alone, more than the entire Bitcoin ETF complex took in over the same period, per Crypto Briefing. Institutions are re-engaging with risk broadly as liquidity conditions ease, and crypto is capturing a share of that rotation, but it is not the preferred vehicle for new money relative to mega-cap tech beta right now.
Where that capital lands inside crypto is just as telling as how much arrived. Bitcoin dominance sits at 59.2% of a $2.61 trillion total crypto market cap, with ether at 11.3%, per CoinGecko data retrieved August 24. Combined, the two ETF-eligible majors hold close to 70% of the market. Solana, up 2.23% on the day, is participating in the broader move, but the concentration in BTC and ETH is the opposite of what a classic altcoin-led risk-on phase would look like.
On-chain liquidity is drifting in the same direction, slowly. Aggregate stablecoin supply reached $309.2 billion, up 0.74% week over week from $306.87 billion, per DeFi Llama. Stablecoin supply is the closest proxy available for on-chain dollar liquidity waiting to be deployed into crypto, and a rising balance has historically been a precondition for sustained spot demand. It is not a guarantee of it.
The regulatory backdrop is widening independent of this week's flow data. Grayscale advanced a U.S. ETF filing for Zcash, proposing a 2.5% fee, with shares targeted to begin NYSE trading on August 25. Each filing that clears review lowers the perceived regulatory overhang for the digital asset class as a whole, which helps explain why institutional flows can accelerate even on a day BTC and ETH both traded lower.
Cross-asset signals point to a liquidity trade rather than a crypto-specific catalyst. SPY and QQQ both posted modest gains, up 0.41% and 0.35% respectively on the same day the ETF inflow data was reported, consistent with a market pricing continued monetary accommodation rather than a flight to safety. When equities, crypto ETFs, and stablecoin supply all drift the same direction at once, broad dollar liquidity is the more parsimonious explanation than an idiosyncratic Bitcoin story.
The bear case deserves equal weight. A single week of inflows following a longer drawdown can fade just as easily as dip buying if the macro backdrop turns. A hawkish surprise from the Fed, a stronger dollar, or a spike in real yields would remove the tailwind quickly. The gap between QQQ's $11 billion August haul and the smaller Bitcoin ETF total also argues that crypto remains a secondary beneficiary of this liquidity cycle, not its primary destination. One altcoin ETF filing does not offset roughly 70% combined BTC and ETH dominance, which leaves little room for a broader rotation into the rest of the market.
Treat last week's inflow data as a data point supporting continued institutional interest, not confirmation of a durable regime change. The next signals to watch: whether the Zcash listing on August 25 draws real volume, whether this week's ETF flow data holds or reverses, and whether stablecoin supply keeps grinding higher. A second consecutive inflow week backed by rising stablecoin liquidity would be the stronger tell.
